Understanding Pregnancy
Basic anatomy and physiology
Basic medical terms that relate to maternity care
Fetal development through the pregnancy
Tests and screenings during pregnancy- why and how they are done along with risks and benefits
4:30-4:45- break
4:45 - Video
5:15-7:00pm
Students will learn the difference between preterm, prodromal and real labor
Understanding labor, and learn how to decide when it's time to go to the hospital.

Day 2 - Saturday
9:00am- 1:00pm
The hormones of labor and birth and the effects they have on both mom and baby.
Understanding comfort measures:
3 ways to an easier birth: Gate Control Theory, Fear/Tension Cycle, and Relaxation
Active birth and optimal fetal positioning
Hydrotherapy and waterbirths
Labor Support Techniques:
Using a rebozo
Using a birth ball
Massage, counter pressure, double-hip squeezes, and many other tricks of the trade
Progressive relaxation
The doula bag
1:00-1:30 Lunch
1:30-4:30
Video
Understanding interventions
Things that go beep, medical procedures and medications used in labor/delivery.
(IV’s, monitors, pain relief, episiotomies, sterile fields, etc)
How to help your clients use their BRAIN
4:30-4:45 - break
4:45-8pm
Understanding reasons for inductions and cesareans
Special situations: VBACs, breech and other situations
How to remain professional when the unexpected happens
The birth plan, and how to help clients develop one
Day 3- Sunday
Starting at 10:30am-11:30am
What to expect immediately postpartum and how to help your clients through the "Golden Hour"
11:30-12:30
Finishing up the role of a doula and understanding how and where to get certified
12:30-1:00- break
1:00- 5:00 pm
Role play - interviews
Role Play - telephone questions
Role play - doula/birth scenarios
Practice comfort measures -60 minutes
stations - progressive relaxation, double hip squeeze, noodle, counter pressure, rebozo sift, chair sitting, knee press, rebozo, hanging, table top, ball, rebozo hip squeeze, rebozo back.
Role Play - labor from early labor to birth.
4:00-5:00
Final conclusion, question and answers
Participants are welcome to stay and have food afterwards!
